Even the Dead Wait in Line

In Hong Kong, the fourth most densely populated city in the world, relatives of the deceased can wait four years or longer to find a place to bury their loved one's ashes. Permanent plots for burial in the city can cost up to $30,000 and are scarce. According to TIME magazine, the Hong Kong government will open up 37,000 new burial niches for cremated remains in the city in 2012, but with the rising death rate, these spaces will only last for one year.
